Short Bio

Dr. Pavlos Lelovas obtained his Degree in Veterinary Science from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, his MSc in Metabolic Bone Diseases from the School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, and his PhD in osteoporosis from the School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, investigating the effect of phytoestrogenic/antioxidant impact of the plant extract Sideritis euboea on bone mineral density and strength on the skeletically mature, ovariectomised rat model of osteoporosis. During his PhD thesis, he investigated the appropriateness of animal models in human diseases; as an associate researcher in Laboratory of Experimental Surgery and Surgical Research “N.S. Christeas”, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with main interests on management, anaesthesia, analgesia and post-operative care of animals during experimentation concerning studies of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In 2006 he was appointed designated Veterinarian in the Laboratory for the Research of Musculosceletal System of the Medical School of the University of Athens, where he investigated animal models in osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, in bone defect repair and in spinal deformity research. His paper "The rat as an animal model of osteoporosis" is one of the most cited papers in the preclinical studies of osteoporosis with 312 citations in Google Scholar. He also participated in the project Synergasia: “Development of natural substances and their analogs for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis: translational, proteomic and metabolic approach” ΟSTEOPRO 09 ΣΥΝ-1076, with Principal Investigator Prof.AL Skaltsounis, School of Pharmacy, for the development, evaluation of the animal model and the administration of substances performed at the LRMS. He also participated in Thalis: “Development of new selective estrogen receptor modulators for the effects of menopause”, MIS 375617, with principal investigator Prof Mitakou S. School of Pharmacy, responsible for the in vivo evaluation of candidate compounds” conducted at LRMS. He also participated as a post-doctoral researcher in ERC-Advanced grand; Research in Nanobiopharmaceutics, entitled “IDEAS–NANOTHERAPY”. A novel nano-container drug carrier for targeted treatment of prostate cancer conducted in the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens. During this period, he has published 36 papers indexed in Scopus and 4 papers in peer reviewed journals not indexed in Scopus . His h-index according to google scholars is 12 and the published papers have 733 citations on the field of animal models in biomedical research. He is a member of scientific societies; 1) Hellenic Veterinary Medical Society 2) Hellenic Society of Biomedical and Laboratory Animal Science (HSBLAS). Honorary treasurer: (2012-2016), President: (2016-today) 3) Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA, http://www.felasa.eu) (Representative of Greece and member of the FELASA Working Group on «Glossary of clinical signs») 4) European Society for Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV) [National representative (2015-today)]
