Short Bio

Dr. Konstantinos Misiakos, received his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, 1978, the M.Sc. from Clemson University and his Ph.D. from the University of Florida where he served as a visiting assistant professor in Electrical Engineering (1987-1989). Since 1989, he is with the Institute of Microelectronics (now INN), NCSR “Demokritos”. His research interests include optical biosensors, solar cells and radiation detectors. He is the author or co-author of 90 publications in journals, 48 communications in international conferences, three book chapters and holds three international patents on biosensors. He coordinated three European projects all in biosensors.

Presentation Title: "FOODSNIFFER" : Α FOOD Safety chip identifying harmful substances in fresh produce

A monolithic optocoupler based bioanalytical microsystem was developed and finalized, within the FOODSNIFFER project, with on chip LEDs Mach-Zehnder Interferometers (MZI), detectors and arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) to analyze on chip the waveguided broad-band spectrum following the MZIs. The complete chip integrates 10 broad band LEDs coupled to their respective 10 MZIs and 10 AWGs. Each AWG has 10 outputs that split the broad-band input light (625-825 nm) into 10 bands of 25 nm each. Following the AWGs, 10 photodetectors form an array dedicated at detecting one of the 25nm-wide bands. Examples of food sample analysis are presented.
