Dr. George Vardoulias George Vardoulias, holds a Diploma in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece (1997), and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (2000). He has worked as a Systems Engineer for Motorola, Semiconductor Product Sector Ltd. U.K., as a Radio Engineer for Vodafone Greece, as a Lecturer in the Hellenic Naval Academy and as a senior Electromagnetics Geophysicist in Rocksource ASA, Norway. He has participated as a researcher in several EU projects. His research interests include the network aspects of software-defined radio technology and Spread Spectrum synchronization techniques. He currently works on Controlled Source Electromagnetics (CSEM) techniques for hydrocarbon exploration, Finite Elements Modeling and Inversion for geophysical applications.
Over the past 13 years, there has been an increasing focus on the use of CSEM (Controlled Source ElectroMagnetic) technology for hydrocarbon exploration in marine environments. Although the true impact of any new technology on exploration success is very difficult to assess, recent exploration results from the Norwegian Continental Shelf show what appears to be a very good correlation between resistivity anomalies in the subsurface and discoveries of hydrocarbons. The importance of accessing CSEM survey data before making a drill decision will be discussed together with the possibilities for future applications of CSEM in the oil and gas industry.
