Short Bio

Jian Wang is the Professor of Aircraft Technology in the school of Aerospace and Aircraft Engineering. He studied solid mechanics at the National University of Defence Technology, China, graduating in 1982 and, after working in industry in China for nearly 10 years, came to the UK in 1993. He completed his PhD in 1998 at Cardiff University, where he worked as a research associate before moving to Cambridge University in a similar role. He was then a lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast before joining Kingston University In September 2009. Jian’s main research areas include renewable energy, structural design, vibro-acoustic and noise control, structure & flow interactions, and aircraft anti-icing. He has published nearly 40 journal papers and 60 peer reviewed conference papers as well securing research funding from EPSRC, TSB, and Industry. In recent years he has been the Principal investigator of whole life cost modelling in an integrated wing project funded by the DTI (TSB now), Drone (a design tool for the cost effective reduction of noise from enclosed power generators) funded by EPSRC-TSI, SANAD (Synthesis of Advanced Top Nano-coatings with Improved Aerodynamic and De-icing Behaviour) DFP7 project, and of a long term collaboration with Bombardier aerospace Belfast in nacelle anti icing. He was awarded the 2010 Kenneth Harris James Prize by the Aerospace Division of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for the best paper published on an Aerospace subject. He has also received the George Stephenson Prize from the IMechE one of the three Prestige Awards (Thomas Hawksley, George Stephenson and Safety Award) from IMechE each year. He teaches various modules in aerodynamics, aircraft performance and design, and structural dynamics for both the Aero and Mechanical school. He also supervises group projects and individual projects for final year students and MSc students, in which he always tries to explore research informed teaching and incorporate his research outcomes. He is an Associate Fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and Member of the Editorial Board for three international journals as well as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
