Prof. Ioannis Mastorakos Ioannis N. Mastorakos received his Bachelor in Physics and his PhD in engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1994 and 2004 respectively. He joined Washington State University as a Research Associate in 2004 and became Clinical Assistant Professor in 2008. In 2014 he joined the faculty of Clarkson University in Potsdam NY and he is currently Assistant Professor in the Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Department. His research has funded by the US Department of Energy and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. He is a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Materials Research Society (MRS) and the Metallurgical Society (TMS). His current research is in the area of the design of new materials using nanoscale structures.
Nanoscale multilayer metallic composites are a new class of materials that exhibit high structural stability, mechanical strength, high ductility, toughness and resistance to fracture and fatigue; these properties suggest that these materials can play a leading role in the future naval and aerospace industry as advanced coatings. The design of better nanocomposite materials can be achieved by properly tailoring the nanostructure using appropriate materials-by-design algorithms. In this talk, the properties and the mechanical behavior of theses structures will be discussed and the modeling and experimental techniques used will be reviewed.
