Mr. Vasileios Kalogirou Vasileios Kalogirou was born in Drama, Greece. He received his MSc degree in Remote Sensing from the University College of London in 2005; since then he works in the utilisation of Earth Observation (EO) technologies in real-life monitoring problems and mapping applications, with the aim to develop innovative EO-based operational services. He has worked for 5 years in the European Space Agency (ESA), as on-site contractor, supporting the definition and implementation of global mapping projects for environmental purposes. On the emergency domain, he acted as an ESA-delegated Project Manager of the International Charter for Space and Major Disasters, coordinating activations over Europe and Africa. Since May 2013, he is a Project Officer of the European Union Satellite Centre (EU SatCen) in Madrid, Spain, where he works in the development and operational set-up of the Copernicus Security Services, in connection to Border and Maritime Surveillance.
An overview of the recent satellite-based Earth Observation developments, on the domain of Border and Maritime Surveillance will be presented. The critical advantages and limitations of EO-based approaches will be explained, with examples taken from R&D projects. The presentation will concentrate on major issues which impact the operational set up of EO services for Border and Maritime Surveillance, highlighting existing and upcoming innovations which might disrupt the way we capture and deliver information from satellites.
