Dr. S. Harissopulos Dr. Sotirios Harisopoulos is the Director of the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics (INPP) of the National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos" (NCSRD). He studied physics at the University of Thessaloniki, Greece and received his PhD in 1989 from the University of Cologne, Germany, as a DAAD scholar. In December 1995 he was elected as a tenure-track research scientist at "Demokritos". In Feb. 1999, he promoted to senior researcher and in Dec. 2006 to "Director of Research". In the period from June 2003 to May 2004, he was on sabbatical at the University of Bochum, Germany, working with Prof. Claus Rolfs on the study of nuclear reactions relevant to stellar nucleosynthesis and the detection of geo-neutrinos. He has received a number of research grants either as visiting scientist or scientist in charge. Within the FP7/CAPACITIES program he was granted a REGPOT project (acronym LIBRA) that led to the full upgrade of the Tandem Accelerator Laboratory of NCSR “Demokritos”.
S. Harisopoulos represents Greece in the Steering Committee of the European Spallation Source (ESS). Until recently he was the Greek delegate for the FP7/EURATOM/Fission program and has represented the Greek funding agency (GSRT) in the FP7/ERANet in Nuclear Physics in Europe (NuPNET). He is currently a member of NuPECC (for Greece), a member of the ISOLDE Steering Committee and member of the Greek National Committee for CERN. His research activities include experimental nuclear astrophysics and applications of nuclear methods. He was chair and/or member of a number of International Conferences and Workshops, invited speaker and lecturer in many conferences and schools and referee in several scientific journals. He has served as an Independent External Evaluator of a number of PhD theses abroad as well as of research proposals on behalf of various European funding agencies. He has more than 150 publications in referred journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings with more than 1500 citations. Dr. Harisopoulos is the Project Coordinator of the NuSTAR infrastructure of the Greek Roadmap for Research Infrastructures.
In our technologically highly developed society accelerated ion and electron beams have become indispensable. Nowadays, a host of innovative applications ranging from the study of structure and dynamics of materials for high-tech applications to artefact analyses and preservation and from drug development to tumor diagnosis and medical treatment are based on accelerator technologies. The key role the associated accelerator facilities play in the scientific and technological development of Europe is visible in the European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures, known also as ESFRI Roadmap, where major Research Infrastructures such as the European Spallation Source (ESS) are embedded. In view of these groundbreaking applications of key societal impact, four accelerator-based research infrastructures of pan-European interest are presented in the “Accelerator Technologies for Society” workshop of the 3rd Hellenic Forum for Science, Technology & Innovation. In the opening talk, an overview of the Accelerator-based ESFRI facilities and their applications program will be presented.
